Short answer: The best lacrosse senior night gift is one the player will keep, not one that ends up in a closet. An engraved solid wood shaft does that: name, number and class year cut into the grain, serial-stamped, one of one. Hickory 60″ for a defenseman, red oak or maple 30″ for a middie or attackman, from $99.99 plus $10 engraving.
Four years of early practices and bus rides deserve something that lasts longer than the flowers. This guide covers which wood to pick for which player, what to engrave in 18 characters, how team orders work, and when to order.
What makes a good lacrosse senior night gift?
Something personal, something they can't buy at the pro shop, and something that still means something in ten years. Most senior night gifts fail at least one of those.
Framed jerseys and photo collages are personal but they're yours, not theirs. Gift cards and gear are useful and forgotten by June. A shaft with their name in it does three jobs: it's a real piece of lacrosse equipment, it's a keepsake, and it's a piece of the game's history. The first game was played on wood.
Every First Grain shaft is solid American hardwood, milled in America in small batches and stamped with its species, batch and serial number. No two have the same grain. That matters for a gift. The one on their wall exists once.
Which wood should I pick for my senior?
Match the wood to the position they played, then to the look you want. Defensemen get the 60″ pole; everyone else gets the 30″ short stick.
| Your senior plays | Pick | Length | Price (before engraving) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close defense | The Hickory | 60″ | $214.99 | The hardest, densest wood we mill. The pole that made them a problem. |
| LSM | The White Oak | 60″ | $322.99 | Dense and ray-flecked. The premium pole. |
| Short-stick D or two-way middie | The Red Oak | 30″ | $99.99 | Bold, open grain. The most wood-looking wood on the rack. |
| Attack | The Maple | 30″ | $99.99 | Tight, pale grain. Engraving reads dark and crisp on maple. |
| Captain, MVP or "the one" | Black Walnut | 30″ or 60″ | $179.99 / $386.99 | The richest color we make, and a limited batch with no restock. |
If it's going straight to the wall, pick by color: maple is the palest, walnut the darkest, red oak and white oak sit in between with the most visible grain. Engraving reads dark on the light woods and deep and subtle on walnut.

What should I engrave on a senior night shaft?
Engraving fits up to 18 characters, cut into the wood rather than printed on top, so it wears with the shaft and never peels. It's $10 on every species.
Eighteen characters goes further than you'd think. Spaces and punctuation count. Some that fit:
| Engraving | Characters |
|---|---|
J. SMITH · #22 |
14 |
CLASS OF '27 · #8 |
17 |
CAPTAIN · #22 |
13 |
4 YEARS · #8 |

Keep it to what they'd want read out loud in ten years: name, number, class year. Inside jokes age fast. Try yours in the engraving preview on any species page before you order.
Can I order engraved shafts for the whole senior class?
Yes. Orders of 12 or more are team orders: volume pricing quoted per order, your program's mark stamped on every shaft, and a single proof with every name and number for you to approve before anything is engraved.
A few things that make team orders easy:
- Mix the rack. Hickory poles for the close D, white oak for the LSMs, maple for attack. One order, every species, and the species mix never splits your price tier.
- Proof before we cut. You sign off on the team mark, names and numbers first. Nothing is stamped until you do.
- Boxed by player. Shafts ship from Idaho, packed 2–3 to a box.
Booster clubs and parent groups: send the roster and the senior night date with your quote request and we'll tell you what timing works.
When should I order?
Order early. Engraving adds a little time to every order, and team orders add a proof round. A good rule: order a single shaft at least a few weeks before senior night, and start a team order as soon as you know the date and the roster.
Spring seasons put most senior nights in April and May, which makes fall and winter the time to order. A shaft also makes a strong holiday gift for a senior heading into their last season: something to play with all spring and hang up after.
Can a senior actually play with it?
Yes. It's a real shaft, not a trophy. NCAA men's Rule 1-18 says the crosse "shall be made of wood, laminated wood or synthetic material," and NFHS high school boys' rules use the same language. The standard 7/8″ × 1-1/16″ octagon fits standard men's heads with the usual screw.
Women's and girls' rules are written separately, so check her rulebook before game use. As a keepsake or a wall ball stick, it works for anyone. More on the rules: are wooden lacrosse shafts legal?
Fair warning on weight: a hickory 30″ shaft weighs 250–285 g, about twice a carbon shaft. For a defenseman, that's the point. For an attackman who wants to keep playing with it, walnut is about 24% lighter than hickory. The full breakdown is in how much a wooden shaft weighs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good senior night gift for a lacrosse player?
A gift they'll keep for decades: an engraved solid wood lacrosse shaft with their name, number and class year cut into the grain. It's real equipment, it's one of one, and it goes on the wall after the season. Hickory 60″ suits defensemen; red oak or maple 30″ suits middies and attackmen. Prices start at $99.99, plus $10 for engraving.
How many characters can I engrave on a lacrosse shaft?
Up to 18 characters, including spaces and punctuation. That's enough for a name and number ("J. SMITH · #22"), a class year and number ("CLASS OF '27 · #8"), or a senior night date. The engraving is cut into the wood, so it won't peel, and it costs $10 on every species.
Can I order senior night gifts for the whole team?
Yes. Orders of 12 or more shafts get team pricing, quoted per order, with your program's mark stamped on every shaft. You can mix species in one order without changing your price tier, and you approve a proof of every name and number before anything is engraved. Request a quote on the team orders page.
Is an engraved shaft covered by the return guarantee?
Yes. Every First Grain shaft, engraved ones included, is covered by the 30-day check guarantee: play with it, and if you don't feel the difference, send it back. Damage from misuse — cutting, burning, using it as a pry bar — isn't covered.
Which wood looks best on a wall?
Pick by color. Hard maple is the palest with tight, clean grain, and engraving reads dark and crisp on it. Red oak and white oak show the most grain. Black walnut is the darkest and richest, with engraving that reads deep and subtle, and it comes from a limited batch with no restock.
